The Poet

A daily comic strip by Todd Webb

The Poet is the same kind of strip [as Peanuts]... soothing in the same way. I’d even say it’s in the same class. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface, if one is looking.

ABout THE POET

I started drawing The Poet in 2020. New strips are posted every day, and they are published in numerous book editions including small pocket-sized paperbacks, an over-sized full-color “Comics Spectacular,” and now in definitive yearly collections.

The cast of the strip is small. There’s the Poet himself, who spends his days wandering around the park, looking at the trees or a pond, or admiring the adjacent sculpture garden before sitting at his favorite bench to write, think, and watch the clouds. He is often joined, interrupted, or lambasted by the spirited Pigeon, who lives for donuts, crime novels, and despises one particularly lumpy sculpture. And, when left alone, the Park Bench itself has been known to dispense a few words of wisdom from time to time.

I know an artist is not supposed to play favorites, but THE POET is by far my favorite thing I’ve ever made, and I hope you like it too. I’ve put everything of myself I possibly can into The Poet comics. If you enjoy it, kindly consider purchasing the books and subscribing to my Substack! And be sure to share it with all your friends.

Praise for THE POET

The Poet has a sense of humor about thinking hard and feeling deeply while not apologizing for such outrageous behavior. It’s refreshing.
— Hal Hartley, filmmaker
These comics are lovely. I keep reading The Poet when I am ‘supposed to be doing something else.’
— Lemony Snicket, author 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'
Todd Webb has figured out what poetry was missing all these years - PICTURES!
— Derek Drymon, executive producer 'Adventure Time' & creative director 'SpongeBob SquarePants'
Funny, sad, strange and beautiful observations on art, life, friendship, and telephone poles.
— Will McRobb, co-creator 'The Adventures of Pete & Pete'
Webb whittles and peels back layers to find more and more in these sparse but vast strips. A man, a bench, a pigeon; THE WORLD. They hang out up the street from Charlie Brown and in the wake of Thoreau, Bushmiller, and Cage. Seen for free daily on Webb’s Instagram feed, but they are even better collected in small digests that feel like old friends.
